With September around the corner, a healthy snack for school is an everyday question: what do you give the kids so the snack doesn't come back home in their bag? There's one rule that works for kids and for adults at work alike: a snack has to look good and be easy to eat. Here are 15 ideas under 15 minutes, with the calories and protein for each one.

What snacks are most often missing
Protein. An apple is fine, but an apple on its own means you're hungry an hour later. Pair fruit with quark, yoghurt, cheese or nuts and suddenly the snack keeps you going until lunch. That's exactly how the snacks in our weekly plans are built: not an extra treat, but a small meal with a purpose. The tuna spread from the list even has its own article with variations: tuna spread.
An honest opinion: shop-bought "kids'" snack bars are mostly sweets with marketing. Prettier packaging, higher price, same sugar.

A snack for work (yes, for you too)
Adults bother less with a mid-morning snack, and lunch pays the price: being ravenous at twelve ends with the biggest portion of the day. A small snack with protein around ten o'clock is a cheap safeguard. The ideas on the list fit an office just as well as a school bag; add a good lunch and the day holds together.
How to manage it every morning
You don't. That's why snacks get prepared in the evening along with breakfast: while the overnight oats are being made, the fruit gets chopped and the yoghurt portioned out. Two extra minutes in the evening, zero stress in the morning.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy snack for school?
A combination: something with protein (yoghurt, cheese, quark, egg) + fruit or vegetables + bread if you like. And above all, something your child will actually eat.
What should I give a child who brings their snack back home?
Less, and make it look nicer: small pieces, colourful, no sauces that make the bread soggy. And get your child involved in choosing from the list; food you've picked yourself goes down better.
Is bread OK for a snack?
Yes, with some protein alongside: wholemeal bread with a spread or cheese makes a proper snack. Dry bread on its own just means quick hunger an hour later.
How many calories should a snack have?
For kids, around 150 to 250 kcal; for adults, 150 to 300 kcal depending on the rest of the day. Every idea on the list has a number, so you don't have to guess.
